Another day, another tariff. As businesses across the country struggle with the weight of increased costs, popular outdoor chain Orvis has announced it will close over 30 locations by 2026. This includes most of the store’s outlet locations.

Orvis specializes in outdoor equipment and sporting goods, though it stocks gear most heavily for fly-fishing and hunting. Home goods, clothing, and apparel are also available, with stores in nearly every state across the country and Canada.

Orvis will be closing 31 stores and five outlets, the retailer told USA Today. In addition to the closures, the chain will also reduce the number of items that it sells.

Simon Perkins, president of Orvis, cited the “unprecedented tariff landscape” to USA Today as the primary reason for the closures. This news comes amid dozens of other stories about the strain tariffs have placed on businesses in the United States.

The chain currently operates over 70 locations, in addition to seven outlets, meaning that after the closures, only about half the locations and two outlets will remain open.

As a refresh next to the closures, Orvis will rework what it sells in-store. Perkins told USA Today the store would be “entering an exciting new chapter by returning to our roots and sharpening our focus on the pursuits at the heart of our heritage: fly fishing and wingshooting.”

Birds and fish beware.
