Petco has announced that it’s closing dozens of stores before the end of this year. It’s a one-stop shop for pet food, toys, supplies, and grooming, so the closures are bound to leave some families with few options for their pets.

The company isn’t alone, either. It’s been a long, challenging year for retailers, and it’s not even over yet. Companies like Joann have completely gone out of business, and pharmacies like Rite Aid have closed hundreds of stores

Here’s what we know, including the list of shuttered Petco stores so far.

Sales are slumping for Petco, and the company is reevaluating its size, according to Fast Company. Net sales have declined 2.3% for the second quarter, and shares of the company are down even more.

In a statement, Petco says that they “have been accelerating initiatives to strengthen our operating model, including optimizing our fleet of more than 1,500 stores across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico.” Translated from corporate speak, that means they’re closing stores.

Last month, the company announced that it would be closing 25 locations in 2025, the same number that it closed in 2024. About a dozen locations have already closed this year, bringing the total number of Petco stores down to just under 1,400.

About half of the projected 25 Petco stores have closed. The company has not given any details about the closing stores, including a list of locations or the closing dates. Instead, outlets like Fast Company are compiling the list of Petco closures based on local reports from news outlets around the country.
