The U.S. Postal Service has unveiled a new stamp featuring the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The stamp is a part of the Postal Service’s 2023 collection that showcases prominent figures throughout American history. Others include authors Toni Morrison and Ernest J. Gaines, Native American activist Chief Standing Bear, and artist Roy Lichtenstein. The Postal Service expects to reveal more stamp designs in the coming weeks and months, it said.

Ginsburg, who died in 2020 after serving on the Supreme Court for 27 years, was well known for her progressive ideals and stances regarding social issues like abortion rights, equal voting rights, and same-sex marriage. She was only the second woman to be nominated to serve on the Supreme Court and became the sole female justice after the retirement of Sandra Day O’Connor in 2006 until the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor in 2009.
The commemorative stamp is a replica of an oil painting of Ginsburg sporting her signature look: a black judicial robe with a distinctive lace collar, large earrings, and oversized glasses.

The Postal Service hasn’t set an official release date for the Ginsburg stamp, and initial sales may coincide with the Jan. 22 increase in the first-class postage rate to 63 cents, a 3-cent increase from current “forever” stamp rates.
