Stores are continuing to close at an alarming rate across the country. From Joann to Rite Aid, companies are filing for bankruptcy and leaving shoppers scrambling to find alternatives.

Safeway is the latest company to announce that it will be closing some store locations soon. Here’s what we know about it, including when and where the doomed stores will shutter.

In case you’re not familiar, Safeway is one of the oldest grocery store chains in the U.S., founded in 1915 in Idaho. Now owned by Albertsons, there are just over 900 locations, mainly in the western part of the country, along with Maryland and Virginia. Early on, the company was an innovator in groceries, being one of the first to offer items by the pound and best-by dates.

Safeway is closing stores soon due to lower-than-expected store performance, according to a statement from the company given to USA Today. “We continuously evaluate the performance of our stores, and occasionally, after long and careful deliberation, it becomes necessary to make the difficult decision to close certain locations,” the statement said. “We are working to place affected associates in nearby stores wherever possible.”

Though the company has not announced exact closing dates for any of the closing stores, it did say that they will close on or before November 7, 2025. If you live near any of them, it’s best to call ahead before you head over there to make sure they’re still open.
