January is the time of year when many people vow to eat healthier, which makes the timing of the latest recall especially unfortunate.
One dietary supplement has been recalled after an investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration tied it to a nationwide outbreak, according to the recall announcement. If you’re taking any powdered supplements to augment your diet, it’s time to check your pantry for these popular super greens products. Here’s everything you need to know, including what to do if you have the recalled supplement.
What’s Wrong With the Supplement?
The recalled dietary supplement powder has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The FDA and Centers for Disease Control were investigating a multi-state outbreak of salmonella infections. That investigation ultimately linked that particular strain of salmonella to the recalled dietary supplement.
So far, there have been 45 illnesses linked to the recalled products, including 12 hospitalizations for severe illness across 21 states. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious or fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system, the FDA said in the recall notice. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
