If there’s one thing Walmart is known for, it’s having the lowest prices on the market but when you compare prices per unit, it’s not so convenient. It’s best to compare prices and not assume you’ll find the cheapest option there. We’ll explain why other supermarkets like Aldi, Costco, Amazon, Target, Dollar Store, and other chains might have better prices!

Name-Brand Spices

A variety of spice and seasoning containers, including Walmart products like Great Value, are arranged on a kitchen countertop. Visible items include ground black pepper, garlic powder, and chili powder, with other kitchen essentials in the background.

The small containers of spices that Walmart offers often cost significantly more per ounce than what you’d find at international grocery stores. In fact, Aldi typically sells larger quantities of spices while maintaining lower prices. One mini bottle of salmon seasoning of 4 oz could cost $5 USD. This isn’t to say that Walmart’s spice aisles are entirely useless, but rather that the convenient containers tend to have a higher price markup

Bottled Water Multipacks

If you compare Walmart to other supermarkets like Costco and Sam’s Club, bottled water is much more expensive. It’s around $14 for a 32 pack. Refillable water bottles and filters are still much cheaper in the long run compared to other bottled waters. And the worst part is that many customers don’t realize this, since it’s a basic necessity.

Single Serve Coffee Pods

Coffee pods at Walmart are much more expensive than a serving of whole bean coffee. Between $0.33 and over $1.00 at Walmart. If you’re a coffee lover, head to Costco, or sign up for an online subscription where you’ll find a lower price per pod. Only if you drink a lot of coffee should you consider having your own machine at home, it’s much cheaper than buying it elsewhere.

Individually Wrapped Snacks

Walmart’s variety pack of snacks is usually more expensive per ounce than a larger pack. It’s an average of $11 per pack. This is due to the wider variety offered, but you can find better prices on candy at other stores like Dollar and other supermarkets. If it’s for your whole family, you could divide the large portion of chocolate yourself at home and separate it before putting it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh.

Fresh Herbs

Walmart’s small herb packets can be surprisingly expensive for the amount they contain. That’s why international warehouse stores offer larger packages of herbs at better prices in comparison to $1.50 on average at Walmart. Some customers choose to save money by growing their own herbs at home year-round.

Greeting Cards

Walmart greeting cards are generally less expensive than those you’d find at a drugstore, but they’re still not as cheap as those at Dollar Stores. Dollar Tree is another chain that offers good prices, at almost half the cost, compared to Walmart’s $5 each. Buying in bulk online can significantly reduce the price.

Laundry Detergent

Keep in mind that you’ll have to continue using laundry detergent for the rest of your life, which is why it’s best to buy it in bulk. But only if the price is right and not the $5 to $20 for standard to large bottles. Walmart’s prices seem cheap, but other stores offer better deals because they buy it in larger quantities, and it keeps better than in smaller packages.

Paper Towels

Another essential item you’ll need for life is paper towels. The key is that some companies may reduce the length of their paper towels, so make sure the sheets are the same in every case. Costco and Sam’s Club offer better prices than the $3 to $25 at Walmart if you buy them in bulk. Pay attention to the unit price, as rolls vary considerably depending on the brand.

Pre-Cut Fruit

Pre-cut fruit is a staple in most homes and you can get it between $3 to $10 in Walmart. But to get it, you’d have to go to Walmart or your preferred store beforehand. Walmart charges more for pre-cut fruit than buying it whole. Aldi and other department stores might offer lower prices. However, melons and pineapples, for example, are still cheaper if you cut them yourself at home.

Phone Chargers and Electronics Accessories

Electronic accessories at Walmart are more expensive than at other stores. For generic adapters and chargers, Amazon has a wider selection and lower prices than the $15 phone charger on average at Walmart. Since you urgently need a new charger because your old one broke, you might not even bother researching where to find the best deal.

Cereal

Walmart’s cereal prices from $2 to $7, are anything but cheap, especially compared to Aldi’s. Among well-known cereal brands, other stores outsell Walmart. One trick is that family-size boxes often seem cheaper when, in reality, the amount of cereal decreases over time.

Frozen Pizza

Promotions at Walmart can significantly affect the price of a frozen pizza, as companies decide when to lower their final price. This is where independent stores and warehouses can often offer better prices than the $2 to $8 at Walmart. And other pizza brands like Aldi are frequently cheaper.
