The way Americans buy food has changed dramatically over the years, and drive-thru restaurants have become one of the most popular options for people looking for quick, convenient, and affordable meals. Technology has helped streamline the experience through mobile ordering, digital menu boards, and improved order accuracy, but some fast-food chains stand out for another reason: speed. Based on customer experiences, industry rankings, and discussions across online communities like Reddit, certain chains have built a reputation for moving cars through the line faster than the competition. Here are the fast-food drive-thrus that customers consistently say deliver some of the quickest service in the industry.

Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A’s practice of serving so many customers via drive-thru has made them one of the best at mastering the system. Their methodology involves employees taking orders via tablet near the restaurant, meaning customers order their food long before reaching the speaker that was previously their first point of contact with the establishment. This speeds up preparation time during peak hours. Reddit user [borrado] commented: “The reality is that Chick-fil-A knows how to run their restaurants a whole better. They won’t be paying additional employees to stand outside holding iPads if they make the drive thru slower”.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell has decided to pay special attention to its drive-thru because it has determined that speed of service is a factor that customers highly value. Therefore, Taco Bell invested in digital ordering, enabling customers to pick up their orders after placing them via mobile phone, and in a production line in the kitchen. Customers mention that Taco Bell is a reliable choice when it comes to speed in this area. Reddit user DoctorStrife commented: “Got my food in 2 minutes, so I decided to still go inside to eat and at the time a couple came in and order it took 10 minutes for their food to come out. It’s a pattern I’ve noticed”.

Raising Cane’s

The ordering process at Raising Cane’s isn’t as complicated because their menu is quite basic, focusing on chicken fingers and a few simple combinations. This simplicity makes Raising Cane’s drive-thru just as efficient as the speed with which they prepare orders. They don’t have to deal with multiple sandwiches or custom dishes, so it’s an easier job for them. Reddit user Few_Application_7312 revealed a tip to make drive-thru faster: “At my store kitchen is the one monitoring how many cars back. The camera footage faces kitchen and service positions. I would try to check your car count as soon as the mic turns off between orders”.

In-N-Out Burger is another restaurant that uses staff around the perimeter to ensure your order reaches the kitchen before your car reaches the speaker. And, of course, the fast-food chain’s menu isn’t very varied. Don’t be fooled by long lines at their locations; customers often say they wait less than expected. Many_Road9858 commented on the comparison between drive-thru and dine in: “Drive is always prioritized but things don’t always go as planned. I’ve worked at stores where drives all move under thirty seconds, and the line inside is endless”.

Culver’s

Culver’s does indeed offer a substantial menu, but it also boasts a drive-thru speed that’s the envy of other fast-food chains. Customers highlight the attentiveness of the employees and the excellent organization. One of the company’s internal strengths is its emphasis on hospitality, in addition to performance. Reddit user clockthatttea revealed: “It’s important to be able to do two things at once on drive. Remember to hand people drinks while accepting their payment as well!”.

McDonald’s

McDonald’s plans to continue technological upgrades to become the fastest drive-thru ordering process, but currently offers dual lanes, mobile ordering integration, digital menu boards and even kitchen automation to further enhance this service. According to customer reviews, it’s one of the most experienced fast-food chains in the drive-thru sector. Reddit user Firm_Airport indicated: “I always go to the drive-thru when I’m nearby, it seems to get made faster than doing it on the app”.

Dutch Bros Coffee

Dutch Bros Coffee has proven its ability to handle high traffic volumes while maintaining friendly customer service. Because you know that amidst all the hustle and bustle, orders, and stress, mistakes can happen. The key is the employees near the drive-thru who expedite the process. Reddit user fuzzandstuffing commented: “Dutch has been consistently better staffed and they work like an assembly line. If it’s a fully staffed day, Dutch will have a person who starts pouring drinks”.

Whataburger

Many Texas locals say that Whataburger’s have one of the fastest drive-thru process, the best in the state, boasting a superior efficiency thanks to the company’s investment in new technologies. And it’s not like Whataburger’s menu is simple; it’s quite extensive, so its reputation is well-deserved. Reddit user notapreacher1162, who was a former Whataburger employee revealed: “The kitchen layout is better if organized in griddle, buns, dressings, bagging, fries, drinks and server”.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

Freddy’s has shifted its focus to online operations, allowing it to fulfill customers orders more quickly. And even when the restaurant is packed with people eating inside, the drive-thru works wonderfully. The chain has grown to such an extent that this system is one of its strongest assets. Reddit user realsnowstorm and ex Freddy’s employee revealed that “We don’t serve vehicles that aren’t cars so don’t come in on a bike or motorcycle. Also DoorDash and other delivery orders cannot go out the drive thru window”.

Starbucks

Starbucks management has been improving for years, to get the fastest drive-thru, even though it’s not a fast food chain. The functionality of phone orders and advance orders make the line move faster once you arrive at the store. Reddit user iceluvr commented: “During peak hours, there is usually one partner operating the drive thru register to take orders, line up drinks for the window, write on the cups if needed, and the other partner works on the window cashing out customers and making small talk during transactions”.

Dunkin’

Dunkin’ has tried to make speed of customer response a key part of its identity. These coffee-based transactions are already quite fast, so achieve the fastest drive-thru process shouldn’t be hard and take more than a minute. However, the company isn’t resting on its laurels and has invested in online ordering and loyalty programs to reduce wait times even further. Reddit user zakaria2328 commented: “I went to the drive-thru the other day, a total of less than 2 minutes for order with two people working. Amazing”.

Zaxby’s

Zaxby’s has built a strong reputation for one of the fastest drive-thru service, despite preparing chicken products to order. These practices have become so refined that other major fast-food chains have adopted them. Reddit user Vegetable-Estate-310 commented: “When you order on the app, it takes standard 8-10 minutes to show on kitchen screen. Don’t use your app on your way because it’s for disaster”.

What These Chains Do Better Than Everyone Else?

You can’t get a speedy response in the drive-thru system by chance. Companies invest in this process through technology, streamlined operations, staff training and other design improvements to make it increasingly popular with their customers. Another factor affecting chain efficiency is the menu display; the more variety you order, the longer it takes. The fastest alternative is to operate as a line of workers with each task clearly defined. That’s how you make the fastest drive-thru.
