Cooler weather and changing leaves can turn an ordinary trail into one of the most memorable hikes of the year. From golden aspens in Colorado to fiery Appalachian forests and the surprisingly colorful canyons of West Texas, the best places to hike in the fall offer plenty more than pretty foliage. The National Park Service highlights autumn destinations around the country, including Rocky Mountain, Shenandoah, Great Smoky Mountains, Guadalupe Mountains, and Yosemite. These 12 destinations are especially worth lacing up your hiking boots for once autumn arrives.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park

Acadia combines several things people want from a New England fall trip: colorful forest, granite mountains, lakes, and Atlantic coastline. For a manageable hike with a big payoff, the 2.6-mile Bubbles Nubble Loop crosses North Bubble, South Bubble, and Conners Nubble, with views over Jordan Pond and Eagle Lake. Parts are steep and rocky, however, and wet granite can be slick. Late September through October is generally the window to watch, but foliage timing varies from year to year.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah’s long mountain ridges provide a particularly good vantage point for watching fall color spread across the Blue Ridge. Stony Man is a relatively approachable option, while Hawksbill reaches the park’s highest point and rewards the extra effort with broad mountain views. Historically, Shenandoah has often seen especially brilliant color around the second or third week of October, though leaves can remain colorful into November. The tradeoff is popularity: October and early November bring heavy leaf-peeping traffic, so weekdays are preferable when possible.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee and North Carolina

The Smokies don’t have one neat foliage week. Because elevations vary so dramatically, color can begin at higher elevations in mid-September and work its way down, with lower and mid-elevation forests often putting on their strongest display from mid-October into early November. Porters Creek and the Oconaluftee River Trail provide alternatives to simply sightseeing from the car. There is a catch: October is the park’s busiest month, and parking and traffic around famous areas can become frustratingly congested.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains deliver the red, orange, and yellow forests that make New Hampshire such a fall-road-trip staple, but hiking gets you above the roadside scenery. Mount Willard is a popular moderate choice because its ledges overlook Crawford Notch without requiring an all-day mountain expedition. More experienced hikers can tackle Franconia Ridge for a much bigger day. Conditions deserve respect, though. Higher elevations can be considerably colder and windier than the valleys, so an otherwise pleasant October morning can turn into a chilly mountain hike quickly.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain National Park trades New England’s mixed hardwood palette for hillsides dominated by golden quaking aspens against dark evergreens and high peaks. The Bear Lake area and Cub Lake are good places to start looking for accessible fall scenery. Color begins at higher elevations in early September and progresses downward, and autumn also coincides with the elk rut, when bugling can be heard around park meadows. Remember that snow can arrive surprisingly early at elevation, and timed-entry requirements extend into part of October.

Green Mountains, Vermont

Vermont has turned leaf-peeping into practically a seasonal pilgrimage, but walking into the Green Mountains offers a better look than simply joining the traffic on a scenic highway. Around Stowe, hikers can tackle Stowe Pinnacle or choose sections of the Long Trail; stronger hikers can consider routes around Mount Mansfield. Northern and higher elevations generally change first, with late September into October being the period to watch. Stowe’s popularity is the downside: lodging, roads, trailheads, and viewpoints can all become crowded on peak-color weekends.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Not every memorable fall hike requires a major mountain climb. Cuyahoga Valley offers colorful woods, waterfalls, and rolling terrain between Cleveland and Akron, making it especially practical for hikers who want scenery without an alpine-level workout. The National Park Service points visitors toward Oak Hill Trail in early October and Brandywine Falls and Brandywine Gorge around mid-month. Sugar maples, sassafras, oaks, dogwoods, and other species provide varied color. Sunny fall weekends get busy, and parking lots can fill around midday.

Catskill Mountains, New York

For a big autumn overlook without committing to one of the Catskills’ longest summit days, Giant Ledge is difficult to overlook. New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation recommends the hike for autumn and notes that its roughly 3,200-foot elevation provides multiple viewpoints across surrounding Catskill peaks. The shortest route is about 2.7 miles round trip, but it is rocky and sometimes steep rather than an easy stroll. It is also very popular, making a weekday outing particularly appealing during the busy foliage period.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula offers a different fall backdrop: northern hardwood forest running toward Lake Superior rather than an Appalachian ridgeline. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park contains more than 90 miles of hiking trails and a large tract of old-growth northern hardwood forest. The Escarpment Trail is the standout for ambitious hikers, following the ridge above Lake of the Clouds, but its substantial elevation changes make it challenging. Easier viewpoints are available near Lake of the Clouds for travelers who want the scenery without completing the full trail.

Ozark Mountains, Arkansas

If you miss the northern foliage season, Arkansas gives you another chance. Color in the Ozarks generally arrives later, making late October and early November worth watching. Whitaker Point, also called Hawksbill Crag, is a roughly 3-mile hike to a sandstone outcrop overlooking the forest near the Buffalo National River. The fall canopy can turn rich shades of red and amber, but the exposed ledges require caution. Cell service is absent along the trail, and visitors should use designated parking rather than leaving cars along the road.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

West Texas might not be the first place that comes to mind for leaf-peeping, which is precisely what makes McKittrick Canyon interesting. Deciduous trees turn red, yellow, and brown against limestone canyon walls and Chihuahuan Desert vegetation, with color generally appearing from mid-October through mid-November. The last week of October and first week of November are often particularly good. Don’t expect solitude on a peak weekend, though. Parking is limited, the area can fill to capacity, and McKittrick Canyon’s gate closes at 5 p.m.

Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite’s autumn color is more scattered than Vermont’s, but the setting makes up for the smaller expanses of foliage. Black oaks, dogwoods, cottonwoods, maples, and aspens bring yellow, orange, and red into a landscape dominated by enormous granite walls. Yosemite Valley provides easy options, while the old road from Badger Pass toward Bridalveil Creek passes aspen groves. October into early November can be rewarding, but fall also brings shorter days and the possibility of changing road conditions, snow, wildfire impacts, or seasonal closures at higher elevations.
