Amazon Prime membership isn’t cheap, but it comes with a lot of perks. Besides free 2-day delivery on many products, you also get access to the company’s TV, movie, and music streaming platforms, and early access to sales, for example.

Now, Prime members will be able to get same-day grocery deliveries for free as well, according to an announcement from Amazon this week. Here’s the details on how you can take advantage of this new perk.

What’s Same Day Grocery Delivery?

You can now get fresh, perishable groceries the same day you order them. So if you forgot to grab strawberries at the grocery store but you’re making shortcake for a dinner party, Amazon can get you those berries pretty quickly.

The feature was tested last fall in a few cities around the U.S., and was such a big hit that Amazon has decided to roll it out to cities nationwide.

Didn’t Amazon Already Have That Option?

If this sounds familiar, it’s because Amazon has had similar fresh grocery deliveries available for a while, but at a cost. You’d have to order through Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market to get fresh groceries, and it would cost $10 per month for free delivery on $35+ orders.

Now with same day grocery delivery, you use the same shopping cart on Amazon for everything, and the groceries come from the same logistics network as everything else Amazon sells. So you can have picture frames, batteries, a new dog bed, tonight’s dinner groceries, and frozen pizza for tomorrow delivered same-day all at the once from one checkout.

How Much Does it Cost?

For Prime members, same day delivery is free for orders over $25. If you want to order less than $25, you’ll need to pay $3 for same-day delivery.

If you don’t have a Prime membership, you can still get same day delivery service, but you’ll have to pay $13 to do it, no matter the size of your order. This is definitely one time when it pays to be a Prime member.

Where Is it Available?

About 1,000 cities and towns across the country now have same day delivery of fresh groceries. There’s no list of locations available, but if you go to the Same Day Store while logged into your account on Amazon, you’ll see many items listed with shipping times of “Today” if it’s in your area.

Will the Service Expand?

If you don’t have same day delivery in your area yet, you may still get it soon. Amazon is going all-in on the service, and plans to expand it to 2,300 more cities and town by the end of this year, plus more in 2026.
