If you’ve ever gone on a road trip in the U.S., you’ll know that McDonalds and Arby’s are not your only options for sustenance. The best truck stops for breakfast in America prove that truck stops, all-night diners, and petrol station–adjacent eateries offer a lot more than just fuel. They’re often some of the best places in town to grab a bite, especially when the sun has yet to rise.
From hearty all-you-can-eat breakfasts to giant burgers and fresh Czechoslovakia pastries, these are some of our favorite finds using tips from Google reviews, Trip Advisor, trucker forums, and Reddit’s trucker subreddit. As a bonus, many stops boast amenities, from showers and lounges to mini-museums. So, whether you’re a trucker or just on a road trip, these stops provide a welcome break from the miles of highway, serving up delicious meals to keep you going.
Balkan Grill Company

Gary, Indiana
Long-haul truckers have been pulling off the I-80 for years to stop by this humble yellow trailer and fill their tummies with authentic, hearty Serbian fare like their juicy Pljeskavica (they call it Gourmet Burger on the menu) that oozes spiced beef juices and mozzarella cheese served with a side of creamy kajmak (homemade cream cheese) to sustain them for the day. Opened by Serbian chef Momcilo Bogdanovic in 2014, everything here is made from scratch, so don’t expect to get your meal in anything under 15 minutes.
Average Breakfast Cost: $15
How Far We’ll Travel: Considering you’re not going to find authentic Balkan food easily, a massive detour – like driving across three states – is not unreasonable. Other must-eats: the smoke-kissed, finger-sized Cevap served on freshly baked bread and their hand-formed pork kebabs.
Dysart’s

Hermon, Maine
Open 24/7, this stop is a go-to of seasoned truckers traveling Highway 2 and Interstate 95. They’re known for the “best pie in Bangor!” and for heaving breakfast plates like the Blueberry French Toast and classic Sausage and Homemade Biscuits.
Average Cost of Breakfast: $12.25
How Far We’ll Travel: Driving a couple of hours extra to have their best-selling chicken pot pie poutine and hot sandwiches won’t feel like a slog.
Brody’s Diner

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts
This low-key diner spot off Route 20 is so authentic, Jerry Seinfeld filmed an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee there. Known for their sizable portions, ordering a stack of Buttermilk Blueberry Pancakes with one of their oversized mugs of coffee should do just the trick.
Average Cost of Breakfast: $10
How Far We’ll Travel: Depending on their specials – we’ve got our eye on pumpkin coffee and their cherry cordial pancake – we’ll happily drive out of our way for a meal there.
Czech Stop & Little Czech Bakery

West, Texas
Open as early as 5 a.m., the freshly-baked sweet or savory kolaches (pastry) from this well-known bakery off exit 353 pulls in big rig drivers looking to satisfy their sugar cravings. It helps that they’re sold solo, by the half dozen and dozen, plus the savory koblasniks (jalapeno, pulled pork, ground sausage, cheese) are the perfect on-the-go meal.
Average Breakfast Cost: $3
How Far We’ll Travel: Situated 200 miles between Dallas and Austin, we’ll drive across Texas for a dozen of their traditional poppy seed and strawberry cream cheese pastries.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch

Amarillo, Texas
Everything is bigger in Texas, and The Big Texan Steak Ranch’s 72-ounce steak challenge definitely fits Texas-sized proportions. Eat it in under an hour and it’s free. Or, if you’re not quite up to it, the ribs, brisket sandwiches, and burgers get good reviews.
Average Cost of Breakfast: $16
How Far We’ll Travel: If you’re already on Route 66, this is an iconic stop to visit, and not just for breakfast!

How Far We’ll Travel: Would you drive more than 100 miles for authentic tamales? We would.
Billeaud’s Meat & Grocery

Broussard, Louisiana
While not conventional breakfast fare, why wouldn’t you have some pork or crawfish boudin for breakfast? In business since 1889, Billeaud’s must be doing something right to keep customers coming back to them. For smaller appetites, order the Pork Boudin Balls or one of their plate lunches.
Average Breakfast Cost: $8.25
How Far We’ll Travel: Aside from their boudin, there’s something about their melt-in-your-mouth cracklin’ which we’ll cross state lines for. Don’t leave without taking home a bag with you.

Cafe 27

Southwest Ranches, Florida
This truck stop/Tiki bar/biker hangout might be better placed for sunset drinks, but it’s still a vibe during daylight hours. Have a taste of their Tostones (fried plantains and chimichurri), juicy Pan de Lechon, or their Cuban to start the day right.
Average Breakfast: $13
How Far We’ll Travel: They may be on the “edge of civilization” but you don’t have to go more than an hour outside of Miami to have a taste of their crispy Gator Bites and cult favorite, the Truck Stop Burger.
Johnson’s Corner

Johnstown, Colorado
Named by the Food Network as one of the “top 5 truck stops,” this old-school diner is beloved for its giant cinnamon rolls that are still hand-rolled on site every morning. Have it together with one of their breakfast offerings like the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs smothered in a delicious sausage gravy, or the cinnamon roll french toast — a local favorite.
Average Cost of Breakfast: $14
How Far We’ll Travel: Located between Denver and Fort Collins, we’ll make the drive over just to get our hands on one of those cinnamon rolls.

This 24/7 truck stop restaurant just south of Grand Rapids off Highway 131 offers an affordable mix of American and Tex-Mex comfort foods including a $10 plate of “Monster” pancakes stuffed with sausage and bacon served with two eggs.
