The maker of Banana Boat skin care products has issued a voluntary recall for three batches of its Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 after trace levels of benzene were found in them. Benzene is classified as a toxic chemical and human carcinogen by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The recalled batches have expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023, and April 2024 and are packaged in aerosol cans.
Though benzene isn’t an ingredient used in Banana Boat products, the trace amounts came from “the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” Shelton, Connecticut-based Edgewell Personal Care Co. said Friday in a news release posted on the Food and Drug Administration website.
Benzene is a flammable colorless liquid that may result in damage to the airway, lungs, eyes, and skin through either topical or oral inhalation, according to the CDC.
Edgewell has advised consumers who purchased or came in contact with the affected products to dispose of them and obtain reimbursements. More information on the recall and other FAQs can be found on the Edgewell/Banana Boat website.
