GTFO It’s Vegan

Vegans and devout Beyond Meat eaters everywhere rejoice: The maker of plant-based meat just introduced a new meat alternative in grocery stores. Joining the likes of its breakfast sausage, burger patties, meatballs, and other meat substitutes is Beyond Steak — bite-sized fake steak, if you will. After testing meatless carne asada made with Beyond Steak at Taco Bell restaurants in Dayton, Ohio, Beyond Meat is rolling out its new plant-based protein to more than 5,000 Kroger and Walmart stores along with other grocers, including Sprouts and Albertsons.

Beyond Steak — which is made from fava bean protein — contains 21 grams of protein and has no cholesterol and less saturated fat than its beef counterpart. A 10-ounce package sells for $8.

The introduction of Beyond Steak comes on the heels of the company’s announcement to slash 19% of its workforce in response to slow-to-rise sales and an 80% plunge in Beyond Meat shares, reducing the company’s market value to $821 million, well below its 2019 high of $13.4 billion. Product launches have previously shown sales boosts for Beyond Meat, though not all varieties have been a hit. Beyond Jerky, for example, was a flop with consumers — so the stakes for this “steak” are beyond high.

Meet the Writer

Rachel is a Michigan-based writer who has dabbled in a variety of subject matter throughout her career. As a mom of multiple young children, she tries to maintain a sustainable lifestyle for her family. She grows vegetables in her garden, gets her meat in bulk from local farmers, and cans fruits and vegetables with friends. Her kids have plenty of hand-me-downs in their closets, but her husband jokes that before long, they might need to invest in a new driveway thanks to the frequent visits from delivery trucks dropping off online purchases (she can’t pass up a good deal, after all).
