We’re only a week into the new year, and already companies are closing stores by the hundreds. Some closures were planned last year, while others have been a little bit of a surprise — like the newest casualty, GameStop.
The retailer and trader of console games, gaming systems, card games, and collectibles appears to be closing hundreds of stores nationwide with only a couple of days’ notice in some cases. While there hasn’t been any official word from GameStop, it’s clear that stores are closing in big numbers. Here’s what we know, including where to find a crowd-sourced list of the shuttering locations.
Why Is GameStop Closing Stores?
Like many retailers, GameStop isn’t performing as well as its investors would like. Revenue was below estimates last year, according to a financial filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in December.
In that filing, the company said it launched a review in 2024 to identity stores that should close. That resulted in GameStop closing 590 stores in the 2024 fiscal year, and they have plans to shutter even more. “We anticipate closing a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025,” GameStop revealed. (The company’s fiscal year ends January 31.)
Sales are down because physical games are becoming less popular as more people download games instead. Many console gaming systems don’t even have ways to play game discs anymore, eliminating the need to buy games at a physical store. It’s part of what’s led to a slow, downward spiral for GameStop, along with the meme stock scheme in 2021 that artificially inflated the company’s share price.
Which GameStop Locations are Closing?
While these closures aren’t without any warning, there still has been no official word from GameStop itself about any of it. All reports of closures are coming from customers and employees who are sharing pictures of stores’ closing signs and stories of being notified by general managers on social media. Local news outlets around the country are also verifying that individual locations are closing. Most employees and customers seem to have been informed only a few days before the planned closure.
Since gamers are a dedicated bunch, someone has set up a website called GameStop Closing List. People report locations that they have been notified are closing for a crowd-sourced list of shuttering stores.
At the time of publication, that website lists 169 GameStop stores that have been “confirmed” are closing. Keep in mind that we don’t know what “confirmed” in this case actually means and have not verified the information ourselves. There are also 120 locations listed as “reported closing” that apparently haven’t been confirmed in some way yet.
If you shop at any of the locations on the list, it’s probably best to search for local media outlets for closing information, or call the store to find out. According to one Redditor, you may be able to see if a store is on the closure list by looking it up on the GameStop store locator. If it lists hours as “CLOSED” in the next week, it may be on the chopping block.
