If you recently bought ground beef and live in one of six states, it’s time to check your fridge or freezer. A new recall involves grass-fed ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The recall affects nearly 3,000 pounds of beef distributed across multiple states. While no illnesses have been reported so far, food safety officials are urging consumers not to take chances.
What’s Wrong With the Ground Beef?
The recalled beef may be contaminated with E. coli O26, a strain of bacteria that can cause symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. In more serious cases, it can lead to severe infection, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
The issue was discovered during routine testing conducted by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The agency says no confirmed illnesses have been linked to the product yet, but exposure is still a concern.
Which Products Were Recalled?
The recall applies to one specific product:
Forward Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef
- 16-ounce vacuum-sealed packages
- Use or Freeze By date: 01/13/26
- Establishment number: EST. 2083 (printed on the side of the package)

The beef was produced by Mountain West Food Group, based in Heyburn, Idaho, and shipped to distributors in the following states:
- California
- Colorado
- Idaho
- Montana
- Pennsylvania
- Washington
What Should You Do If You Have It?
If you have this ground beef at home, don’t eat it. The USDA advises consumers to either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
Anyone who experiences symptoms after eating ground beef — including severe stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea — should contact a health care provider.
As always, when it comes to recalls, checking labels takes a minute. Dealing with food poisoning takes a lot longer.
