Unlike some retailers (looking at you, Walmart and Target), Costco gives its employees the day off on more than a handful of holidays. But there is really no rhyme or reason to the warehouse store’s holiday calendar, so we’ve put together a guide covering Costco’s seven annual closures, including Memorial Day.
Is Costco Open on Memorial Day?
Don’t plan a trip to Costco on Memorial Day, as all stores will be closed, according to the retailer’s website. That said, there are several grocery stores open on Memorial Day and during most other holidays (see below).
What Are Costco’s Hours?
Although Costco’s hours vary by store, they generally stick to the following pattern:
Monday – Friday: 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m
Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The below retailers, which are open on Memorial Day and have fewer days off, will be your best bet when Costco is closed.
Walmart
You can expect Walmart stores to be open every day of the year save for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Walmart is even open on Christmas Eve, though the store holds holiday hours, closing at 6 p.m.
Target
Target is closed during just three holidays: Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Otherwise, you’re good to shop.
Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s has a similarly thin holiday calendar, only closing on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Whole Foods Market
The only day that Whole Foods is definitely closed is Christmas, though some store locations will have modified hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. You’ll need to check your local store for details.
When Should I Shop for the Holidays?
Plan to shop for the holidays during major sales events, such as Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, Amazon Prime Day, and Black Friday. In other words, the best way to shop is to have a game plan — and stick to it. If you have a list and shop during sales, you won’t have to scramble to Costco on, say, Christmas Eve, when the store is so crowded that shoppers describe it as “chaos and hellfire.”
