Hot and fresh doughnuts are irresistible, as any Krispy Kreme fan will attest. Those squishy, warm rings with their glaze coating that crackles when you bite into it are a thing of beauty.

Krispy Kreme has made a name for themselves with those basic, inexpensive treats. But there’s one doughnut the chain sells that blows all the others out of the water in price and exclusivity. It’s called the Big Apple, and people can’t stop talking about it on social media.

What Is Krispy Kreme’s Big Apple Doughnut?

The Big Apple is a Krispy Kreme doughnut inspired by the bright red candy apples sold on Coney Island’s boardwalk. It’s a yeasted, round doughnut filled with red delicious apple-flavored cream. There’s a bright red glaze on top that’s ridiculously shiny, and to make it look even more like an apple, it sports a green royal icing leaf and a crunchy pretzel stem.

Was definitely an experience and the dark green box made it so cute to walk around with. It was too big to bring back home but loved it! 🍎🫶🏼 #nyc #newyork #nycfood #krispykreme #fyp

To make it feel extra luxe, the tip of the leaf is dusted in edible gold — because what screams luxury more than wasting a precious metal by eating it? It also comes in a very nice dark green box that holds a single Big Apple doughnut, complete with gold Krispy Kreme logo.

How much will you pay for the pleasure of eating this tasty-looking-but-not-super-special doughnut? $13. Yikes

Where Can You Get It?

As you may have guessed, the Big Apple doughnut is available at Krispy Kreme only in New York City. Specifically, it’s only at the Times Square location, which opened in 2020 and is the chain’s flagship store. So unless you’re planning a trip to NYC sometime soon, you’re just going to have to refrain from paying $13 for a shiny doughnut.

But hey, if you do go, the Times Square Krispy Kreme is open 24/7, so if you happen to be wandering around the city at 4:00 in the morning and you’re starving, they’ll be happy to take a bunch of money off your hands for a single doughnut.

Is It Even Worth the Money?

We’re frugal people, so no, the $13 Krispy Kreme Big Apple doesn’t seem worth it. And who thought it was a good idea to flavor it after the worst apple ever — the Red Delicious — anyway? Is it just as mealy and bitter as those terrible apples? Probably not, but we digress.

On social media, opinions are mixed from people who actually ponied up the money for the thing.

“It was extremely sticky to the touch,” recounted u/foodtravelfantastic on Reddit. “It was like they put on the red frosting then put on another clear coat of shiny frosting. In general it was a sweet sugar taste. No flavors.” Hey, at least it’s consistent with all the Red Delicious apples we’ve had before.

In a video on TikTok, therealmelindastrauss loved both the doughnut and her experience at the Times Square Krispy Kreme.

“It tastes so good… this is incredible,” she exclaims as she’s trying it for the first time. “This was worth the money. I mean I wouldn’t get it all the time, but I’m so happy I got this.”

If you’re a Krispy Kreme superfan, or you don’t need to worry about potentially wasting $13, then sure, give it a try. It does fit in with the Times Square vibes, so you do you. As for us, we’ll pass if we’ve ever in NYC.
