Mighty Swell Spiked Seltzer

Remember when there were only two or three hard seltzer brands? I barely do anymore. When it became clear you could produce easily-drinkable, gluten-free beverages made with natural flavors and only 100 calories, the competition opened up wide. Based in Austin, Texas, Mighty Swell Spiked Seltzer features cold-brewed sugar alcohol, and has hit the scene hard with 12 flavors (and more in the works). I decided to grab two Mighty Swell seltzer variety packs — Classic and Tropic, each containing four distinct flavors — and ranked them. I got you.

I’m not convinced this tastes anything like a blackberry, but that’s where my issues end. Like almost every Mighty Swell hard seltzer, the fruity, sweet flavors only enhance the experience. I’m really impressed. It’s light, it’s clean, and it’s troublingly easy to finish one before you know it.

It’s odd how much Mighty Swell seltzer reminds me of soda, yet it lacks all the syrupy sweetness that soda is known for. This isn’t far off from a cherry lime rickey. Just, you know, for adults.

I involuntarily said “yum” out loud when I tasted this, and because I am not a cartoon character, that’s not something that happens very often. Though the base of the drink starts with natural white grape juice for some reason, watermelon and mint flavors announce themselves instantly, bright and fresh. It’s like a tasty, not-so-sweet mojito.

This tastes exactly like a Fresca. If you are my grandfather, you’ll love this. If you’re looking for a milder grapefruit taste, you might want to skip this. What can I say, I’m my grandfather’s grandson.

5. Mango Raspberry

We’re dealing with way more mango than raspberry here, but for some reason, I really don’t mind it. This is one of the best mango flavors of any seltzer I’ve tried to date; sweet and not overwhelming. Despite a nonexistent raspberry element, I like this very much.

6. Blood Orange

This is a pretty solid blood orange. It’s tart and not too bitter, but this is one of the only Mighty Swell seltzer products where you can really feel the weight of the alcohol content. This has a heaviness about it that I don’t mind, but it makes it harder to fly through a few cans of blood orange than the other flavors.

7. Peach

This guy is quite sweet, and really doesn’t taste too much different than a gummy peach ring. Is that your vibe? It’s not mine. The flavor really isn’t that bad, but I don’t think I could make it through more than one can.

Hoooooooooooly smokes, this is bad. I shouted out loud when I took a sip of this. The entire flavor profile going on here feels, smells, and tastes like it’s gone bad. This is a huge surprise to me, based on Mighty Swell’s otherwise very strong showing. I’d avoid putting this beverage anywhere near your face for the rest of the time that you’re alive.
