There’s been tons of news of companies filing for bankruptcy and closing stores this year, but one bookseller is bucking that trend. Barnes & Noble, the blast-from-the-past book store that rose to popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, is opening dozens of new locations in 2025. Here’s where new Barnes & Noble stores have already opened, and where the company is planning to open new ones.
Why Is Barnes & Noble Opening New Stores?
People love reading, and they appear to appreciate paper versions of books once again. The decision to open new locations came after existing stores showed strong sales, according to USA Today. Previously, Barnes & Noble had been consistently closing stores for about a decade, so this is a surprising — and exciting — turn of events.
Most of the new locations have the chain’s homey B&N Cafe inside, inviting customers to have a coffee and snack while perusing the latest best sellers. All will sell the chain’s assortment of gifts, toys, and games, in addition to books and music.
When Will the New Locations Be Open?
There are 32 new Barnes & Noble stores that have already opened this year. The company is expecting to open 60 total nationwide. Unfortunately, the company has not released addresses or opening dates for the remaining stores planned for this year. But with only a few more months left, we’re guessing that the goal is to open them all before peak holiday shopping season.

They are: Washington, Louisiana, California, Tennessee, Idaho, Florida, New York, Connecticut, Texas, Colorado, Michigan, Washington D.C., Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
