In-N-Out has long been California’s best fast food chain. It’s got scores of fans devoted to its high-quality burgers, fries, and shakes — but it’s been impossible to get outside of the West Coast.

Thankfully, the cult favorite restaurant chain is finally expanding, albeit slowly. There are new locations listed as “coming soon” on the In-N-Out store locator, so more people east of the Rockies are going to become fans soon. Here’s what we know about the new In-N-Out locations.

What Is In-N-Out?

If you’re not familiar with In-N-Out, it’s a fast food chain that started in 1948 and has amassed legions of loyal fans over the decades. The menu is small and simple (burgers, fries, and shakes) with an emphasis on quality ingredients like never-frozen beef that the chain grinds itself.

There’s a whole system to ordering, with the Double-Double — two beef patties and two slices of cheese — being the most popular choice, but you can get a three-by-three or four-by-four if you want. Order your burger (or fries!) “animal style” and it’ll be cooked with mustard, pickles, and fried onions, just one of In-N-Out’s not-so-secret menu items.

If It’s So Popular, Why Aren’t There More Locations?

In-N-Out emphasizes quality so much that it won’t open new locations further than 300 miles from a distribution center. Because the chain owns no freezers, the fresh beef patties and other fresh ingredients must be delivered to restaurant locations within a day.

While expansion for the chain has been slow, the company plans to open a new office in Franklin, Tennessee, its first east of the Mississippi. Finally, people are getting a taste of their first Double-Double animal style burgers beyond the West Coast.

When Will the New Locations Open?

There are five new In-N-Out locations listed as “coming soon” on the chain’s store locator. There’s no word yet from the company when those locations will open, but if you live near one, it’s best to keep an eye on local media reports for more specific information.
