Old El Paso Tortilla Pockets
Old El Paso

If you’ve ever tried (and failed) to roll a burrito, you know how difficult it can be. Old El Paso, the General Mills-owned Tex-Mex brand, is capitalizing on that difficulty with its Tortilla Pockets. As its name suggests, Old El Paso’s pockets are easy-to-hold tortillas with a sealed bottom, which means you can quickly make a no-fold burrito

The company offers two Tortilla Pockets products, a kit that includes Old El Paso taco seasoning and Old El Paso taco sauce alongside the tortillas, and a standalone pack of eight pockets. Old El Paso’s new offerings are retailing around $4.79 and $3.69, respectively. (Prices and availability are subject to change.)

While Old El Paso launched the Tortilla Pockets in the U.K. market back in 2020, they’re relatively new to the U.S., where they’re quickly picking up momentum online (with the help of sponsored content and celebrity endorsements).

Ali Fedotowsky-Manno, of season six Bachelorette fame, is among the most prominent boosters of the new Tortilla Pockets. The mother of two told Business Wire that she uses the mess-free Old El Paso pockets on taco night. And on TikTok, the popular social media-famous musician @jaxwritessongs recently wrote a song spotlighting Old El Paso’s product.

While Old El Paso’s product might seem new (and perfect for taco night or taco Tuesday), it bears mentioning that a multinational corporation like General Mills didn’t invent the idea of flatbread with a pocket. In the Mediterranean and Middle East, people have been eating pita bread for thousands of years, and there are a variety of pre-Columbian dishes from the Americas, such as tlacoyos, arepas, and pupusas, that incorporate pockets.
