Nearly 40 people across 18 states have gotten sick, and one person has died after eating organic carrots distributed by Grimmway Farms, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in a statement on Nov. 17.

On Nov. 16, the California-based supplier issued an urgent recall for its organic whole and baby bagged carrots with best-if-used-by dates ranging from Sept. 11 to Nov. 12, 2024.

So far, 15 hospitalizations and one death have been reported in California, with Washington, Minnesota, and New York among the states with the highest number of cases.

The CDC warns the actual number of illnesses may be higher as many people recover without seeking medical care.

The contaminated carrots were distributed across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada at major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Whole Foods Market, and Trader Joe’s.
