If you grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s, you likely remember the high-stakes thrill of the blue and red “BOOK IT!” button. That same hit of nostalgia is coming back this year to help a new generation of parents survive the most expensive season of the year.

Having kids home for the summer is a budget-buster. Between the constant “I’m hungry” snack raids, the cost of summer camps, and the need to keep them entertained 24/7, your wallet takes a beating. Pizza Hut is stepping in to offer a reprieve: As of May 1, parents can officially enroll their kids in the “Summer of Stories” program to earn free food.

How to Get Free Pizza from Pizza Hut

The program is simple and (most importantly) completely free. It’s open to children in Pre-K through 6th grade (ages 4–12) and runs from June 1 to August 31.

Here is how it works:

  • Sign Up: Parents can enroll their children through the Book It! app.
  • Track Reading: You set the reading goals for your child. Whether it’s a certain number of pages, chapters, or minutes, once they hit their milestone, you log it in the app.
  • Earn the Reward: After reaching their goal, kids receive a digital Reading Award Certificate.
  • Redeem: That certificate is good for one free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza at Pizza Hut.

Students can redeem one certificate per month. Over the course of the summer, that’s three free meals you don’t have to cook or pay for.

Can we seriously extend this to the adults please? #pizzahut #bookit #booktok #literacy

Background of Book It!

Originating in the mid-1980s, Pizza Hut’s Book It! program was the brainchild of Pizza Hut executives looking to support literacy efforts championed by the Reagan administration. It was a massive success, reaching 7 million students within its first year.

Decades later, the program remains so beloved that Gen Xers and Millennials are taking to social media to demand an adult version. While there’s no Adult Book It! just yet (because being an adult sucks), the current program is a win-win for parents: your kids stay sharp for the next school year, and you get a night off from the kitchen without hitting your credit card.

Why It Matters for Your Summer Budget

Summer learning loss is real, but summer spending surge is even more tangible. When you’re paying for babysitters, daycare, or just a few extra boxes of granola bars, every little bit of savings counts. By tying reading goals to a free meal, you’re not just encouraging literacy, you’re gamifying chores and rewards (which is the pinnacle of efficiency with kids). It turns a standard summer afternoon into a celebration at the restaurant where the student is the guest of honor.
