Since its inception more than 50 years ago, Shake ‘N Bake hasn’t changed — until now. The Kraft Heinz Co. is doing away with the very container behind the product’s name: The plastic shaker bag. Across the Shake ‘N Bake line, shoppers will no longer find plastic bags within the box of breading — a shift that the company hopes will reduce plastic waste by about 900,000 pounds a year.

So how do you coat your meat with the crispy breading to achieve the optimal crunchy coating without shaking it in the bag? Shake ‘N Bake now encourages consumers to use a reusable container to blanket their meat with its seasoned bread crumbs. Of course, some consumers are already expressing outrage — how dare Kraft Heinz mess with Shake ‘N Bake? Ricky Bobby would be appalled. But Chicago-based Kraft Heinz is just the latest company to take steps toward becoming more environmentally friendly, trailing the likes of the Aldi grocery chain and Coca-Cola.

Kraft Heinz Brand Manager Brianna Galvin is assuring home chefs that the plastic bag isn’t the part of Shake ‘N Bake that makes a tasty pork chop.

“While the ‘shaker’ bag is an important part of our legacy, our product is just as effective and delicious without the plastic waste,” Galvin said in a news release, “and we are excited for all the good to come from this simple, yet effective packaging change.”
