Costco is a $242 billion retail machine built on bulk deals, cheap hot dogs, rotisserie chickens, and membership fees that print money. Founded in Seattle in 1983, it has grown to over 870 locations worldwide.

As of January 2025, Costco has 624 stores in the United States and 127 million members, according to ScrapeHero. It seems some states are more into bulk shopping than others.

Here are the 10 states with the most Costco locations, including one with more than triple the number of the second place state.

10. Michigan

Number of stores: 17Population per store: Approximately 587,470 residents per store

Michigan knows a thing or two about stretching a dollar, and Costco fits right into that mindset. The state’s 17 warehouses are well spread out, covering key metro and suburban areas, with locations near Detroit in Livonia, Madison Heights, and Roseville, as well as Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Bloomfield Township.

9. Virginia

Number of stores: 17

Population per store: About 502,120 residents per store

Virginia also has 17 warehouses strategically placed near high-density areas across the state, like Arlington, Newington Springfield, Norfolk, Fairfax, and Winchester.

8. New York

Number of stores: 19

Population per store: Roughly 1.02 million residents per store.

New York has more Costco locations than Michigan and Virginia, but for a state with such a massive population, it’s still not enough. Downstate stores in Brooklyn, Queens (Rego Park), Manhattan (East Harlem), and Staten Island are always packed, while shoppers in New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Oceanside enjoy a bit more breathing room. Upstate, Rochester, and Syracuse serve a much quieter Costco crowd.

7. Arizona

Number of stores: 20

Population per store: Approximately 363,950 residents per store.

Arizona, being a state built for car culture, suburban sprawl, and air-conditioned shopping, has 20 Costco warehouses. Phoenix alone has several locations, as does Tucson.

6. New Jersey

Number of stores: 21

Population per store: Around 422,950 residents per store.

New Jersey squeezes 21 Costcos into a relatively small area because if there’s one thing New Jerseyans love, it’s getting the best deal possible. Some of the most popular locations include Teterboro, Clifton, Wayne, Cherry Hill, and Bayonne.

5. Illinois

Number of stores: 23

Population per store: About 550,960 residents per store.

Illinois is home to 23 Costco locations, and as expected, the majority of them serve Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.

4. Florida

Population per store: About 650,850residents per store.

Florida’s 33 locations are mostly in Orlando, Miami, Naples, and Tampa, with Miami’s Costcos being the busiest — packed with families, vacation rental owners, and shoppers stocking up on oversized café con leche supplies.

3. Washington

Number of stores: 34

Population per store: About 223,970 residents per store.

Washington is Costco’s birthplace, so its 34 locations make sense. Seattle’s Costco is one of the busiest, while warehouses in Spokane and Tacoma serve bulk shoppers across the state.

2. Texas
