Pharmacy chains are closing locations at an alarming rate this year, depriving people in some areas of a much-needed service. CVS is closing hundreds of stores this year, and Rite Aid is set to close 361 locations after filing for bankruptcy.

Now, Walgreens is closing tons of stores. The company announced last year that it plans to shutter 1,200 locations over the next three years, and some locations are set to close this month. Here’s what we know, and which locations are closing soon.

Pharmacies, including Walgreens, have had rough times over the last few years. There’s more competition from online pharmacy providers, smaller reimbursements for prescriptions, and higher labor costs. Many Walgreens locations have had to operate with fewer employees, leading to reduced hours, long wait times, and angry customers.

In general, many customers don’t see big retail pharmacy chains in a good light anymore.

The company plans to close 500 underperforming stores or locations where leases are up this year as part of the goal of closing 1,200 locations in the coming years. According to Newsweek, which compiles data from the Walgreens website, 25 Walgreens locations will be closing in June 2025.
