If you’re planning a busy Thanksgiving this year — whether you’re hosting the feast or going to a potluck — you may wonder which grocery stores will be open in case you need to run out for last-minute ingredients or to handle other kinds of crises. 

We did the homework so you can focus on perfecting that turkey recipe (or side dishes; we ain’t judging). So even if you suddenly remember you’re short on cranberries or if the stuffing needs an extra boost, you’ll know exactly where to head. These are all the grocery stores that will open on Thanksgiving Day, and the ones that will be closed.

In recent years, more businesses — including prominent retailers — have opted to close their doors during the holidays to show appreciation to their employees. 

In 2021, Brian Cornell, Target’s CEO, announced that all Target outlets would remain closed on Thanksgiving Day for the foreseeable future. Cornell said the company made the decision with the “utmost consideration for the well-being of employees and customers.” 

Similarly, Walmart CEO John Furner said during a segment on the NBC morning show “Today” that Walmart would be closed on Thanksgiving Day to “allow associates to spend time with their loved ones.” 

The Bottom Line

Thanksgiving can be stressful — especially if you’re in charge of the dinner spread. But with our list, at least you’ll know which grocery stores will remain open for those last-minute grocery runs. As mentioned above, remember to always call your local store before heading out as many retailers will be running on a limited schedule for Thanksgiving.
