We’ve all heard that we eat with our eyes first, but some restaurants may be taking that advice a little too seriously. In an effort to make dishes stand out, chefs have ditched boring old plates in favor of everything from shovels and shopping carts to toilets and other objects that should probably stay far away from the dinner table.
Thanks to the internet, diners have been documenting these baffling presentations for years — often leaving us with just one question: What was wrong with a plate? Here are 20 of the most ridiculous examples of restaurant food plating we could find.
Rock Bottom

Nothing says “fine dining” quite like having to forage for your dinner. This shrimp tempura was served perched on a pile of rocks, because apparently a regular old plate just wasn’t dramatic enough.
Shrimp Dispenser

One commenter summed up this bizarre presentation perfectly: “So this is what it’s like to be a chicken with a seed dispenser.” Instead of simply putting the shrimp on a plate, this restaurant makes diners fish them out of a contraption that looks more suited for feeding livestock.
Straight to the Bone

Juicy bone marrow is messy enough without serving it on a well-worn wooden board, but that’s exactly how it arrived at Mateo Bar de Tapas in Durham, North Carolina. We can only hope that board has seen plenty of soap between servings.
Between a Rock and a Hard Snack

This squid ink cracker was served directly on a rock, because apparently plates are passé. Sure, the dark cracker against the stone makes for a dramatic presentation, but it also looks like something you might stumble across while hiking.
A Stromzoni Situation

Part Stromboli, part calzone, this so-called “stromzoni” is already doing a lot before you even get to the presentation. Apparently, combining two Italian-American favorites wasn’t enough — it needed a ridiculous serving vessel to complete the experience.

Summoning Something Sweet

Is this dessert or some kind of elaborate ritual? With the ingredients carefully arranged in a mysterious circle, one commenter joked that “it looks like they’re trying to summon something.” Whatever happens next, we just hope dessert is involved.
Tartare on the Rocks

These beef tartare bites come skewered on sticks and planted upright in a box full of rocks. It’s an impressive bit of engineering, sure, but we’re still struggling to understand what was so wrong with putting them on a plate.
Eggs by the Glass

Poached eggs are usually something you eat with a fork, but this restaurant decided a drinking glass was the better vessel. Nothing gets the appetite going quite like a couple of slippery eggs staring back at you from your cup.

Dig In

General Tso’s chicken is already a crowd-pleaser, so we’re not sure why it needed to be served on a shovel. At least this presentation makes “digging into dinner” a little more literal.
Knock on Wood

This roasted chicken skipped the plate and landed directly on a hefty slab of wood. The diner admitted it was tasty, at least, proving that ridiculous presentation doesn’t necessarily mean ridiculous food.
A Balancing Act You Have to See to Believe

At Cafe 69 on Koh Samui, simply putting food on a plate apparently wasn’t exciting enough. This dish arrived in a cartoonish balancing contraption that looks more like a tabletop sculpture than dinner. It’s certainly memorable, but you have to wonder what was wrong with a good old-fashioned plate.
Some Assembly Required

This deconstructed burger turns dinner into a DIY project, with the bun, patty, and fixings served separately for diners to assemble themselves. One commenter wasn’t totally opposed to the idea, but made a fair point: If you’re going to make people build their own burger, at least give them plenty of toppings to play with.
Dessert by the Cup

This dessert skipped the fancy china and arrived in a measuring cup instead. It’s definitely not the most outrageous plating on this list, but there’s still something amusing about ending a restaurant meal with a dish served in a piece of kitchen equipment.
A Bright Idea for Cocktails?

Why serve cocktails in regular glasses when you can pour them into giant light bulbs? One Redditor shared this photo from their in-laws’ vacation dinner, where the drinks came in glassware that looks more suited to a science experiment than happy hour.
A Recipe for Scratches

Serving food straight from the pan is one thing, but pairing a nonstick skillet with metal cutlery takes this presentation to another level. Anyone who’s been warned never to scrape a nonstick pan with metal can probably feel the scratches forming just by looking at this photo.
At Least the Pour Is Precise

There’s no need to wonder whether the bartender shorted you when your drink comes with measurements printed right on the side. This cocktail was served in a measuring cup, proving that apparently anything in the kitchen can become glassware if you’re creative enough.
Bread, Fresh From the Drawer

Forget the bread basket — this restaurant decided a tiny wooden drawer was the better way to go. It might make for a memorable presentation, but pulling dinner rolls out of what looks like miniature furniture is certainly an unusual way to start a meal.
A Cocktail by the Seashore

Apparently, regular glassware just wasn’t beachy enough. This drink arrived inside a seashell, making it look more like something washed up with the tide than a cocktail you ordered at a restaurant.
Who Needs a Salad Bowl?

Bowls are apparently optional at this restaurant, where the salad was scattered directly across a serving tray. Sure, there’s plenty of room for all those greens, but eating them without sending half the salad over the edge seems like part of the challenge.
From the Garden to the Table

This restaurant took the farm-to-table concept a little too literally by serving hummus in what looks like a garden tool. It’s creative, sure, but some diners might prefer their dip without equipment that looks ready to start digging in the backyard.
