A trend has emerged in recent years at bars and restaurants where food and drinks are served in exotic ways. You might be brought a cocktail in a box that releases smoke when opened, or served dishes featuring extravagant colors. While this certainly appeals to some, it grabs the attention of others so strongly that they’ve shared their experiences on Reddit. This kind of restaurant presentation has inspired plenty stories online!

The Bread Served Inside Some Fur

A piece of bread is partly covered by brown faux fur, resting on a wooden table with glassware and plates nearby. A person’s arms are visible in the background.
urdsrevenge – Reddit

It isn’t very difficult to set out a bread basket, or as many restaurants do, place small side plates for a couple of individual rolls next to your main dinner plate to get a restaurant presentation. Instead, the customer had to make do with a roll that came inside a sort of fuzzy pouch, looking like some strange animal that had just been hunted. A reply from Samwise912 revealed: “I have worked there, it’s a high-end Australian restaurant that serves bread in real kangaroo fur.”

Enclosed Bowl With Soggy Food

A large glass bowl filled with sweet potato fries and topped with two burgers and grilled skewers, sitting on a dark table in a restaurant with purple chairs and warm lighting.
[borrado] – Reddit

We understand why restaurants want to serve food in exotic or quirky ways, to get people to take photos that go viral and attract more customers through free publicity. But this restaurant presentation actually works against the food; it can cause those French fries to get soggy from the heat and steam released by the freshly cooked burgers.

Syrup Down His Arm

ZebraBoat – Reddit

Reddit user ZebraBoat posted this picture of pancakes, and who doesn’t love this sweet dish? Although, in this image, it’s not really on a plate at all. The syrup is running all the way down to his wrist because pancakes shouldn’t be served on a rimless board. This restaurant presentation could have been avoided with a simple plate.

A Regular Glass Would Have Done The Job

A round, gray stone with a hole sits on a glass table next to a stack of white napkins and a clear water glass. Part of a smartphone is visible under the table.
MrMagicMoves – Reddit

Reddit user MrMagicMoves found the waiter heading toward their table with this hollow stone containing the cocktail he and his wife had ordered. The funny thing is that they weren’t even given a straw; they had to drink straight from the hole until the cocktail was finished. The glass visible at the top of the image would have worked perfectly.

Noodles and No Bowl

A hot dog bun filled with canned spaghetti rings in tomato sauce sits on a white napkin on a marble table.
redditinshans – Reddit

It is truly difficult to try to eat pasta without a plate, so this image is enough to haunt anyone. A bun that looks like a hot dog roll, filled with noodles is something we never expected to see. There is no way for a person to eat that food without making a disastrous mess around the table. This restaurant presentation makes the dish looked especially difficult to eat.

It’s The Closest You’ll Get to a Plate

A plate of food is served directly on top of a glowing tablet screen at a restaurant table, surrounded by cutlery and glasses.
cheekyjan – Reddit

At this restaurant, the food is served on an iPad that displays an image of the dish. It is an utterly absurd situation. A reply from user comingupmilhauz mentioned: “I have worked at a similar restaurant, where the iPads had a type of cover or holder that was washed between uses.” It’s restaurant presentation that prioritizes novelty over a traditional plate.

Time To Go… Out

A person wearing a wristwatch holds a scoop of melting ice cream on the back of their hand. A candle, glass, and beer are on the table.
TheSoulOfTheRose – Reddit

Reddit user TheSoulOfTheRose revealed that the waiter prepared an appetizer right on his hand. The cheese foam is spooned onto the back of your hand, and the waiter instructs you to lick it off. The problem arises if you don’t like the taste: how do you get rid of it without making a mess at the table? It’s not like you can just leave it there until the waiter takes… your hand away, the way you would with a plate.

Bone Dish

A gourmet appetizer with meats and vegetables is artfully arranged on a large, flat bone, set on a table with cutlery, wine glasses, and toothpicks nearby.
tsjoepvdv – Reddit

At least with this sort of odd dish, which appears to be made of bone, the shape seems to be concave, so the food won’t spill over the sides. Still, it looks awkward to eat from, just look at the size of it; it extends well beyond the cutlery. The restaurant presentation is certainly more eye-catching than practical.

Ravioli on a Clothesline

Several crispy snacks are clipped to a hanging rod above a tray with herbs and a sauce; drinks and glasses are on the table, and people sit in the background.
corkboy – Reddit

It’s not common to have ravioli served on a clothesline instead of a bowl. Ravioli need some kind of sauce, like the one visible at the bottom right, but the fact that they come hanging up takes it to another level. The man sitting across from the ravioli with his arms crossed looks completely disappointed with the choice of restaurant. This restaurant presentation turns a simple pasta dish into a spectacle.

Watch As Your Favorite Dish Moves Away

A metal Ferris wheel-shaped server holds baskets filled with fried appetizers on a restaurant table. Drinks, sauces, and menus are also visible, with part of a person sitting at the table.
EZcheezy – Reddit

At the very least, everyone at the table has a square plate, but the way the food is served isn’t entirely convenient. While the presentation is undeniably fun, if you want something else, you have to wait for it to be served before you can grab a piece of what you wanted. This restaurant presentation looks entertaining but doesn’t necessarily make serving yourself easier.

VHS Plate

Two ice cream sandwiches made with cookies and pink ice cream rest on a worn VHS tape of “The Bodyguard.” Nearby are a napkin, a glass, and other glasses on a wooden outdoor table.
CowTravels – Reddit

The published image reveals a trend that is getting out of hand, because it wouldn’t have reached this point if most of the customers complained about this. Reddit user CowTravels shared a story about a man who complained that, in Canada, he was served pudding on top of an old VHS copy of “The Bodyguard”. He even mentioned hoping it was a joke, but it wasn’t. This restaurant presentation may be memorable, but it’s certainly unconventional.

Pizza on a Snowboard

Slices of pizza are served on a skateboard deck placed on a wooden table surrounded by people, drinks, and red napkins.
HarryFlashman1927 – Reddit

There are restaurants that are more laid-back than others, places that are less concerned with formality and might entertain customers with some quirky touch, but a pizza served on a skateboard is one of the strangest things you’ll ever see. Reddit user HarryFlashman1927 revealed that it’s a ski resort called “The Snowdome”, in Tamworth, England.

The Clothesline is Back

Three tortilla chips hang on strings above three bowls of dips with wooden spoons, served on a wooden tray. A woman and child are partially visible in the background at a dining table.
mmonzeob – Reddit

The clothesline trend doesn’t just apply to ravioli, as we saw earlier, it can also be used to present nachos. There are only six nachos for the whole table. It looks like there is more sauce than actual nachos provided, lots of presentation, but little substance to this appetizer. This restaurant presentation seems to emphasize appearance over quantity.

More iPads Plates

Plates of gourmet food are served on top of digital tablets, displaying brick patterns, with dishes including lamb chops, dessert, and assorted vegetables.
itsjacques – Reddit

Reddit user itsjacques revealed that a friend of his sent this photo while in a restaurant, and mentioned he was not impressed. The extravagance and imagination of these people have strayed so far from conventional presentation that few things are surprising anymore. The cables charging the iPads add a distinctive touch, let’s just hope the cleaning crew rigorously washes the cases on those devices.

We Want Cups?

A cocktail served in a lightbulb-shaped glass with a straw sits in a crystal bowl, beside another cocktail in a wine glass with a lychee garnish on a wooden table.
Nbednaz16 – Reddit

Reddit user Nbednaz16 revealed that the photo was sent by his in-laws while they were vacationing and in some bar they served this cocktail. A reply from user redoingredditagain mentioned: “They sell jars shaped like this made specifically for drinking but the fact that this has peeling paint is awful.” Whatever the intention, this restaurant presentation raise questions about practicality.

Curry on a Chopping Board

A wooden tray with creamy beef stroganoff and a bowl of white rice topped with colorful steamed vegetables. Plates, cutlery, a soda can, and a glass are in the background.
skelto – Reddit

You can’t serve curry on a wooden board, everyone knows that. A reply from Reddit user parttimepedant mentioned: “The raised edge around the board suggests they realize that a curry needs to be served in something that will stop sliding off the dishes. You know something like a bowl or a plate!” This restaurant presentation seems particularly ill-suited to a saucy dish.

Overcooked Eggs in a Pan

A skillet with a baked omelette containing ham and vegetables sits on a table next to two English muffins and a plate with a small slice of toasted bread.
Lerrcey – Reddit

This customer was served eggs, clearly overcooked, in the very pan they were cooked in. And it’s not exactly a spotless pan, either, just look at that handle, it looks like it’s caked with grease from other meals. He added: “Sadly I didn’t send it back, although I wanted to. It was breakfast with my very non-confrontational wife, on her birthday of all days.” This restaurant presentation does little to make the meal look appetizing.
