From furniture to toys to all sorts of home items, Facebook Marketplace is one of the hottest “virtual thrift stores” out there. But if you’ve used the platform at all, you know how frustrating it can be to be ghosted by a buyer or seller or discover an item was totally misrepresented.
If you’re looking to get rid of your own belongings, here are common Facebook Marketplace mistakes that so many others are making. Don’t be like those people.
Your Photos Suck
Blurry, dark, poorly taken photos don’t do your item justice. Stock photos waste everyone’s time. Items look best in daylight, so try to shoot by a window. And if there is a flaw with the item, it’s important to be honest and take a pic of that, too.
Your Prices Blow
Yes, you want to make money on the item. But unless it’s something highly sought after, your expectations are probably too high. Be sure to do some research, and price accordingly to how others list. You may be able to make your item more desirable by offering to handle shipping, but that hassle is up to you and how much you want to get rid of it.
Your Description Is Lame
Here is where you truly need to do some work. Share accurate dimensions and conditions. You may want to add why you are getting rid of it if applicable. And be sure to label the item correctly. Using searchable words, such as “mid-century dining chair” versus “chair,” might make your item stand out.

You’re Not Deleting the Listing When Sold
Did you successfully sell your item? Then be sure to delete the post in a timely manner. There’s nothing more annoying than being on the other side of this, spending some time trying to get an item, only to find out it’s not even available anymore.

You’re Being Unfair to Buyers
Be clear about how you’re handling who gets the item, and define that process in your listing. First come, first serve works, but we’ve all been subject to a buyer who keeps delaying their pickup time. Define limits, such as “grab it in the next 24 hours or I’m moving on to the next person.” If the price isn’t negotiable, be sure to say it.
The biggest rule of Facebook Marketplace? Don’t waste people’s time, and don’t allow them to waste yours.
