Despite what fast-food companies want you to believe, good deals at the drive-thru are going the way of the dodo. Chains are raising prices and axing the best deals all in the name of “reimagining” value menus or trying to convince us that what we really want is “better value” instead of lower prices.
In just the first few months of 2026, a handful of fast-food giants have already announced menu revamps or quietly killed deals in the name of more shareholder profits and bigger CEO salaries. If you can’t seem to put an order together at your favorite chain without spending $10 or more, that’s by design — and you’re not alone. Here are the biggest fast-food deals we’ve already lost this year, and there’s certainly more to come.
McDonald’s: Free Fries
McDonald’s free fries on Fridays promotion ran for a number of years and was so popular that it spurred some of the other big chains like Burger King to start offering free fries as well. But it’s truly the end of an era as the Golden Arches has quietly removed that deal from the mobile app and website.
Some people on Reddit report that the deal has been gone in their area for a long time, while most say that the deal was killed early this year. In some areas, it’s been replaced by a deal for $1-$2 large fries that you can redeem anytime — but that’s far from free.
Panera: Value Duets

Panera recently touted adding its “first” value menu to the brand, but the chain is conveniently ignoring the much better deal that it has replaced. Value Duets, which were a menu staple for years, came with a half sandwich and soup or salad for $7. It was a great way to get food fast that wasn’t a burger.
The new Mix-and-Match value menu, on the other hand, requires you to pay $10 for similar half sandwich-and-soup-or-salad combos. All the chain’s advertising is deceptive, too, because it touts everything on that menu is $5 — but the catch is that you must buy two or more. It’s a classic move of distracting you with a shiny new value menu while getting rid of the actual values.
Subway: Sub Club
Subway just pulled one of the fastest bait-and-switch moves on its customers. In December, the chain announced that it was bringing back the nostalgic Sub Club, a loyalty program that was discontinued way back in 2005. Members of the club would get a free Footlong sub if they bought three Footlongs (or six 6-inch subs). It worked like a punch card.
Two months later, Subway announced that it was killing the buy-3-get-1-free portion of the Sub Club. That was, of course, the main reason everyone signed up. It essentially gave you 25% off four subs, but that was too much of a leap for the chain to make, apparently. Was this quick reversal planned all along, or did the company really not see this coming? Either way, Subway should get bent.
Wendy’s: Biggie Deals

The best deals by far at Wendy’s in the last few years have been Biggie Bags and the 4 for $4 meal deal. While they changed some minor things over time, like giving us smaller sandwiches in a $5 Biggie Bag, they were incremental changes that weren’t too bad. We didn’t know how spoiled we were.
At the beginning of this year, Wendy’s completely revamped their meal deals. The 4 for $4, with its sandwich, 4-piece nuggets, fries, and a drink, was the biggest loss. It’s been replaced by $4 Biggie Bites, where you get only two items for $4. And the new $6 Biggie Bag? That’s what the 4 for $4 used to be, just a few months ago — except now it’s 50% more expensive.
Taco Bell: Cravings Value Menu
Taco Bell is one of the last fast-food spots you can go to when you only want to spend a few dollars but want more than just a tiny burger. That was thanks to the chain’s Cravings Value Menu, which had the cheapest items on the menu, like $1 cheesy roll-ups and spicy potato soft tacos.
But the value menu got a revamp (and a rename to “Luxe”), and five items were discontinued completely, only to be replaced by new items that cost up to $3 each — not really what we’d consider “value menu” worthy. Plus, it was a great excuse to increase the prices of the remaining five cheap items, chipping away at our wallets slowly but surely.
