Macy’s is set to close 14 more underperforming stores as part of its “Bold New Chapter” turnaround plan. The iconic department store is nearing its goal of 150 closures, which it first announced in February 2024.
Macy’s permanently shut down 55 locations in 2024 and another 66 stores in 2025, putting the company at roughly 80% of its planned closures.
“Macy’s, Inc. continues to execute its Bold New Chapter strategy, making targeted adjustments to its store footprint to better serve customers and support long-term growth. These actions allow us to reinvest in go-forward stores and digital capabilities,” the company told USA TODAY.
What Is the Bold New Chapter Plan?
Bold New Chapter is a turnaround strategy introduced in 2024 by Macy’s CEO Tony Spring, aimed at improving sales, revitalizing the brand, and positioning the company for long-term growth. In addition to closing underperforming locations, the plan includes investing in 125 so-called “Reimagine” stores, which are receiving increased staffing and targeted upgrades in departments such as women’s shoes.
The strategy appears to be gaining traction. In the most recent quarter, those 125 stores posted comparable sales growth of 2.7%.

“We have made meaningful progress and remain clear-eyed about the work ahead,” Spring said in a memo sent to employees. “We are seeing customers respond through strong performance in our go-forward business, record Net Promoter Scores, and improved results over the first three quarters.”
