The new year has gotten off to a rocky start for some retailers, with many already announcing store closures planned for 2026. But some companies, including Target, are planning to expand this year with new locations, bringing aisles of housewares, clothing, seasonal decor, and groceries to shoppers in 22 states. Here’s what we know about the openings, including the list of new store addresses.

Why Is Target Opening New Stores?

The news that Target is opening new stores is a little bit surprising. Just a few months ago, Target laid off 1,000 corporate employees and canceled an additional 800 open job listings. It all accounted for about 8% of the company’s global corporate workforce.

The layoffs came as Target’s sales slumped for almost all of last year. Early in 2025, the company announced that it would be pulling back on its DEI initiatives, values that they had touted for many years. That angered some shoppers, who have taken their money elsewhere in large enough numbers to affect Target’s bottom line.

In its November earnings report, Target revealed that third quarter net sales were down 1.5% compared to 2024. It had even worse results in the previous quarter.

Given all that, it’s surprising that Target is planning to open more stores. But it’s a huge global corporation, and they certainly have all kinds of data and tools to help them determine where best to put new locations to raise profit. Presumably that’s what’s happening now, and we can also assume they’re being very strategic about it.

Target lists upcoming store openings on its website; currently, there are about 40 locations listed across 22 states. According to USA Today, a few of those locations have already opened, so the list may be slightly out of date.

We don’t know exactly when any of these stores will open, as there are no grand opening dates listed on the website. If you live near one, it’s best to check local media outlets for reports related to the opening. Here are the 39 Target stores opening soon, organized by state.
