Two popular brands of potato chips — Zapp’s and Dirty — have just been recalled, and it’s the latest in a series of health alerts tied to one ingredient used in many different products. Before you break out that bag of chips from your pantry for late-night snacking, check to be sure it’s not part of this recall.Â
What’s Wrong with the Chips?
The recalled potato chips may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious or fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
The problem stems from dry milk powder that was used as an ingredient in the chips. That powder, sourced from California Dairies, has been recalled because it may contain Salmonella. It was used in the seasoning on the recalled chips, but the seasoning tested negative for Salmonella. The recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution, according to the FDA.
Dry milk powder is an ingredient used in many processed foods, and the recalled California Dairies milk powder has led to other health alerts, including Aldi and Walmart frozen pizza and pork rinds.
Thankfully, there have been no reports of illness from these recalled potato chips so far, according to the FDA.
