There are few things more wonderful to plan than going on vacation. If you’re looking for budget-friendly mountain towns, you’ll be happy to know that an unforgettable getaway doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It’s not always about skiing, staying in lavish hotels, or paying exorbitant prices. We’ll reveal some great places and tips for enjoying a fantastic vacation on a low budget!

Boone, North Carolina

If you love hiking, waterfalls, and picture-perfect scenery, there are few places better to visit than Boone, North Carolina. On one side are the Blue Ridge Mountains, and nearby is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which connects Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, all within a town with a truly captivating atmosphere. And if you’re looking for a price point, you’re unlikely to find better lodging and dining options in any other mountain destination. Besides that, Boone overall transportation and utilities are cheaper.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Very close to Boone, and overlooking Great Smoky Mountain National Park, is Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It’s no wonder this national park, with its incredible diversity of plants and wildlife, is one of the most visited in the United States. And it also boasts a rich cultural history in the southern Appalachian region. You can access the Great Smoky Mountains national park for free and cabin rentals are very competitive in price.

Rapid City, South Dakota

The famous Mount Rushmore is located in Rapid City, South Dakota, as are the Black Hills and Badlands National Park. If you’re not familiar with the Black Hills region, you’ll be captivated by its stunning natural scenery and charming small-town atmosphere. Compared to other mountain destinations in the West, this area offers affordable accommodations.

Flagstaff, Arizona

@TripAdvisor

The great thing about vacationing in the mountains is that, being at higher altitudes for much of your trip, you’ll enjoy milder temperatures. If you’re analyzing Flagstaff, Arizona, you’ll notice that the area boasts forested landscapes, mountains, and other attractions. But they’re not common in the sense of being unattractive; rather, there are many of them, much like at the Grand Canyon. If you’re a traveler looking for affordable outdoor activities, you’ve found the perfect place!

Missoula, Montana

You don’t always want to seek out a mountain destination for hiking, fishing, or camping, although Missoula offers all of that, but you’ll also find a small-town atmosphere that’s been lost in many parts of the United States. And you’ll immediately notice that this city offers much more affordable options than other luxury destinations because they have no sales tax, their rent is lower than the coast and they have accessible recreation sites.

Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid might sound familiar because it hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980. But beyond that distinction, which few cities can boast, you can enjoy lake activities like kayaking or hiking through the Adirondack landscape. The trick? Visit during the off-season, which makes it more affordable. In comparison to Aspen or Vali, they have fewer luxury amenities and the location is tucked away so it makes it more affordable.

Ogden, Utah

Ogden, Utah has little to envy to Park City, as you can also access the Wasatch Mountains but at a more competitive price. The surge in activities in the city is due to the popularity of both biking and hiking, which have become very common among a mix of budget travel enthusiasts and sports fans. Their lack of heavy high tech corporate makes it affordable.

Asheville, North Carolina

The combination of mountains and beer might sound appealing to many, and that’s exactly what Asheville, North Carolina, offers. After all, a bit of art culture and a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains sounds wonderful, and Blue Ridge is one of the East Coast’s most scenic destinations. We won’t lie, prices to this destination have been rising in recent years, but a short getaway during the summer is still cheaper than other options.

Ruidoso, New Mexico

It’s not every day you see a mountainous landscape covered in forests when traveling through the Southwest, which makes Ruidoso, New Mexico, a truly unique experience. Whether you enjoy hiking, casinos, horse racing, or simply want to rent a cabin to relax, this is the perfect town. Compared to other more well-known Western towns with mountains, Ruidoso will save you some money because of the lower overall cost of living.

Roanoke, Virginia

Any young person who has graduated high school in the United States knows what Roanoke has to offer, so the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail are a given. But beyond the scenery this mountain town provides, what makes it even more appealing is that lodging is much cheaper compared to other destinations with luxury hotels. And on top of that, you’ll find a wide variety of food and beer that will attract any weekend traveler.

Bend, Oregon

When it comes to hiking, breweries, lakes, and outdoor activities, Bend, Oregon doesn’t disappoint. You can enjoy a variety of activities in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, and the summer temperatures aren’t as oppressive as in other Western cities farther inland. Similar to Asheville, Bend has seen some price increases, but that shouldn’t deter you from camping in the area. They still maintain their no sales tax policy and the relative utility costs are less compared to coastal hubs.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

The combination of a mountainous landscape, river activities, and truly affordable accommodations makes Chattanooga one of the destinations that meets most of the requirements a person looks for in a vacation. If you want to go hiking while admiring the Appalachian Mountains and sightseeing in a completely revitalized town, book your flight now. The lack of state income tax there is what makes it more affordable and the cost of living is below the 10% national average.
