Chain restaurant prices have been rising for years, and Americans have been accepting gradual inflation for some time. But some businesses have pushed costs so high that customers no longer see the value. Throughout 2026, many meals you can buy at grocery stores have become cheaper than those at restaurants. We’ll reveal some of the restaurants where prices have skyrocketed and the prices they display on their own websites!

McDonald’s

McDonald’s combo meals now exceed $10 to $15 in many of the chain’s locations because the price can vary by region and ingredients. In the mid-2020s, McDonald’s menu prices rose so much that they were dubbed “McFlation.” This is why McDonald’s has focused on promotions available only through apps, as the prices of the regular menu have sparked customer dissatisfaction.

The way Subway sandwiches are made, with premium proteins, fries, and drinks, has led to even the smallest combo meals exceeding $15 to $18 USD in several cities. As of 2026, many customers have criticized Subway for losing its reputation as a “cheap food” option. This shifts in prices may change the way americans think about dining altogether.

Five Guys

A burger, fries, and a drink at Five Guys can easily exceed $20 USD per person at some locations. While many customers still appreciate the generous portions at Five Guys, they point out that the price increases could bring other competitors closer to the same level of pricing. Five Guys has often been cited as a prime example of inflation in the fast-food industry.

Chipotle

Chipotle customers often complain that the portion size hasn’t kept pace with the rising prices. A bowl of burritos with guacamole and cheese, plus a drink, can cost up to $20 USD. Many people still remember when Chipotle was considered one of the cheapest restaurants around. All customers expect either genuinely low prices or better quality when spending restaurant level money.

Applebee’s

Many restaurant chain prices have been rising, to the point that several appetizers range from $15 to $25 USD each. If you add up drinks, appetizers, and a suitable tip, the cost a family will pay for lunch is far beyond reasonable expectations. Because of this, Applebee’s has focused on offering promotions and limited-time deals to keep its menu somewhat competitive.

Buffalo Wild Wings

The price of chicken has increased significantly due to transportation costs, rising gasoline prices, and the cost of feed. As a result, inflation has hit so hard that a plate of chicken with a drink now costs between $30 and $50 USD for two people. It’s no wonder that eating chicken wings is no longer an affordable option for many.

Considering that for $15 to $20 USD you can buy a soup, a sandwich, and a drink, it seems like a lot. That’s why customers often wonder if the portions they get at these restaurants are worth it. Or rather, worth the money. What was once a cheap meal has now become “premium.” It’s posible that in 2026 many chains still attract loyal fans, but consumers became far less forgiving when prices rise faster than value.

Shake Shack

It’s a well-known fact that the price of a Shake Shack combo meal -burgers, fries, and a milkshake- is often higher than that of other fast-food restaurants that compete with Shake Shack. This is especially true given that many of these businesses compete on price in the country’s most populated cities, making it easy to compare prices. As a result, customers have come to perceive Shake Shack as having a premium price point in recent years.

Olive Garden

As for Olive Garden’s meals, these can cost anywhere from $20 to $30 USD per person, including drinks and sides. There has been considerable surprise among large groups of diners, who are outraged by the significant price increase. On the plus side, the unlimited breadsticks still add some value to the business.

Starbucks

Specialty coffees typically cost between $6 and $9 USD, depending on the customization options and size. However, breakfast sandwiches and baking supplies can push the cost into a price range similar to lunch at a well-known restaurant. Therefore, many people are choosing to make their own coffee at home to avoid these extra expenses at coffee shops.

Red Lobster

The inflation that seafood has experienced has hit chains specializing in this food throughout the 2020s. Dishes featuring shrimp, crab, and lobster have become difficult choices for families who are mindful of their budgets. Many people are now comparing the prices at these seafood chains to those of upscale restaurants.

Pancake chains haven’t escaped the impact of food inflation, for example, due to the significant increase in the cost of eggs and bacon. A typical breakfast, which a few years ago might have seemed inexpensive, now costs between $15 and $20 USD. As a result, many customers no longer believe it’s worth having breakfast at a fast-food restaurant.
