A hotel stay is supposed to be the easy part of a trip. Whether you’re on vacation, traveling for work, or just stopping overnight during a road trip, you expect a clean room, a comfortable bed, and maybe a decent breakfast before heading out again.

But sometimes, checking into a hotel turns into the beginning of a story you’ll be telling for years. Across Reddit, travelers and hotel employees have shared unbelievable experiences involving creepy encounters, room mix-ups, mysterious discoveries, and bizarre guests. While many of these stories ended safely, they’re enough to make anyone double-check the room before unpacking.

Here are some of the wildest hotel horror stories people have shared online.

A Camera Was Pointed Right Into The Room

One Reddit user recalled stopping at a tiny roadside motel after nearly two days of driving with his girlfriend. The place already felt unsettling, with an unusually intimidating desk clerk and surveillance monitors behind the front desk. They decided to stay only because they were exhausted.

Everything changed in the middle of the night. Curious after seeing the unattended front desk, the guest glanced at the surveillance screens and realized one camera was broadcasting live footage from inside their hotel room, showing his girlfriend asleep in bed. He quietly packed the car, woke her, and they left immediately. Looking back, he believes leaving that night may have been the smartest decision they made.

One traveler opened the door expecting an ordinary hotel room but immediately noticed an overwhelming odor. After walking inside, they discovered an unpleasant surprise sitting on top of the freshly made bed.

The hotel staff apologized repeatedly and moved the guests to another room, even sending a complimentary gift basket afterward. While the issue was handled professionally, nobody could explain how housekeeping had somehow prepared the room without noticing what had been left behind.

They Walked Into Someone Else’s Room

Room assignment mistakes happen more often than people realize, but they’re still incredibly awkward.

One traveler checked into a hotel, unlocked the assigned room, and immediately found another guest’s luggage—and even clothing—already inside. They quickly backed out and returned to the front desk for another room. Others in the same discussion shared similar stories of accidentally entering occupied rooms, proving that even hotels occasionally make surprisingly serious check-in errors.

The Romantic Getaway Didn’t Include A Bed

A couple booked what was supposed to be a four-star hotel for a romantic weekend in San Francisco. The reservation seemed perfect until they opened the door to discover something missing: the bed.

Instead of a standard guest room, the hotel had assigned them a parlor room designed for entertaining guests. It featured seating, a minibar, and a beautiful view—but nowhere to sleep. After a lengthy discussion involving the booking website, they eventually received a proper room for the second night, but not before their romantic weekend got off to an unforgettable start.

Construction Ruined An Otherwise Perfect Honeymoon

One newlywed couple splurged on a beautiful hotel for their honeymoon, only to discover that major construction was taking place directly across the street.

The constant noise began early each morning and continued throughout the day, making it nearly impossible to enjoy the peaceful getaway they had envisioned. What frustrated them most wasn’t the construction itself—it was that the hotel never mentioned it before they arrived. Since then, the traveler says they always ask hotels if any renovation work is scheduled nearby before booking.

The Fire Alarm Went Off Three Times In One Night

Few things are more stressful than a hotel fire alarm after midnight. One traveler experienced not one false alarm—but three.

Each time, guests evacuated into the parking lot while firefighters inspected the building. After the first two alarms proved to be false, many guests were reluctant to leave their rooms again. Unfortunately, the alarm sounded a third time before dawn. Frustrated and exhausted, one traveler simply packed up, checked out early, and booked a room at the hotel next door.

Guests Found Some Truly Strange Things In Their Room

Hotel rooms occasionally hide forgotten belongings, but some discoveries are stranger than others.

Among the most memorable items Reddit users reported finding were a bar of soap inside the coffee maker, a bouillon cube tucked into the shower head, and even a toenail resting on a pillowcase. None of these discoveries posed any real danger, but they certainly left guests questioning how thoroughly the room had been cleaned before check-in.

A Creepy Message Was Waiting Inside The Closet

One traveler checked into a budget motel that already felt a little unsettling. Then they opened the closet.

Scratched into the inside of the door was an eerie handwritten message claiming, “The children will lead you to safety.” While it was almost certainly someone’s attempt at a prank, seeing it alone in a quiet motel room late at night made the guest wonder who had written it—and why. Sometimes imagination does the rest.

Hotel employees often see unusual behavior, but one front desk worker shared a story that stood out above the rest.

An intoxicated guest wandered through the hotel completely unclothed while trying to remember which room belonged to him. According to the employee, he knocked on several guest room doors before police eventually located him in a stairwell and escorted him away. Families staying nearby understandably found the incident alarming, and it became one of the hotel’s most talked-about nights.

The Hotel Accidentally Put Guests In Staff Quarters

One high school tour group arrived at what appeared to be a lovely hotel in France, only for three students to be assigned a room that looked nothing like everyone else’s.

The room had stained walls, sticky floors, and an old skylight that wouldn’t close. Even stranger, the guests found an unidentified bag tucked inside a hole in the wall. After reporting the condition, the hotel apologized, explaining they had mistakenly placed the students in staff accommodations because the hotel had been full the previous night. To make up for the mistake, they upgraded them to the presidential suite for the rest of their stay.

Noise complaints are common in hotels, but sometimes guests hear far more than they ever wanted to.

One traveler recalled spending two consecutive nights listening to loud arguments and extremely personal conversations from the room next door. Sharing the experience with both his girlfriend and his mother made the situation even more awkward. Looking back, he says he should have simply called the front desk instead of hoping the noise would eventually stop on its own.

The Bad Room Turned Into The Best One In The Hotel

Not every hotel horror story ends badly.

One traveler arrived at a hotel in Nice, France, only to discover they had been placed in what appeared to be employee housing instead of a guest room. The accommodations were dirty, uncomfortable, and clearly below the hotel’s usual standards. After notifying management, the staff apologized for the mix-up and upgraded the travelers to the presidential suite, complete with multiple balconies and a jacuzzi. What started as one of the worst hotel experiences of the trip ended up becoming one of the best.

A Good Hotel Stay Shouldn’t Become A Story

Most hotel stays are completely uneventful, and that’s exactly how travelers prefer them. But as these stories show, it only takes one strange room assignment, one unsettling discovery, or one unforgettable guest to transform an ordinary overnight stay into a travel story that gets retold for decades.

The next time you check into a hotel, it might be worth taking a quick look around the room before settling in. Chances are everything will be perfectly normal—but if these online stories prove anything, it’s that sometimes reality can be stranger than fiction.
