Your phone plan might look affordable at first glance, but those monthly charges can quietly creep up over time. That’s often because of phone plan add-ons you didn’t realize were activated, forgot to turn off, or simply never needed in the first place. From unused data packages to bundled subscriptions you barely touch, these small fees can add up to hundreds of dollars a year. The good news? Most of them are easy to remove once you know what to look for.

Here are 10 sneaky phone plan add-ons you can cancel to start saving money right away.

Extra Data Packages You Don’t Use

Carriers often add “data boosts” or extra gigabytes for a few dollars a month. If you’re consistently under your data limit — especially on Wi-Fi most of the time — you’re paying for data you don’t need.

International Data or Roaming Add-Ons

Traveling abroad? Many plans automatically add international data passes. The catch: They don’t always turn off when you get home. If you’re no longer traveling, this is one of the first add-ons to remove.

Streaming Services Bundled Into Your Bill

Music, video, and gaming subscriptions are often bundled into phone plans at a “discounted” rate. The problem? You may forget they’re there — or never use them at all.

Mobile Insurance You Don’t Need

Phone insurance can cost $10–$18 per month. If you rarely drop your phone, already have coverage through a credit card, or plan to upgrade soon, this add-on may not be worth it.

Hotspot Add-Ons

Some carriers charge extra for mobile hotspot access or higher hotspot speeds. If you never tether your phone (or only do it once in a blue moon), this fee can go.

Cloud Storage Upgrades

Extra cloud storage for photos and files sounds useful, until you realize you’re barely using the free tier. Many people pay monthly for storage they never come close to filling.

Premium Messaging or Ringtone Subscriptions

Yes, these still exist. Premium SMS services, ringtones, or “fun alerts” can sneak onto your bill through old sign-ups or accidental taps and quietly renew every month.

Device Protection or Tech Support Add-Ons

Beyond insurance, some plans include paid tech support or “device care” services. If you’re comfortable troubleshooting on your own, this is easy money back in your pocket.

5G or ‘Premium Speed’ Upgrades

Certain plans charge extra for access to faster data speeds. If your everyday usage is just scrolling, texting, and streaming on Wi-Fi, you likely won’t notice a difference without it.

Family Plan Features You No Longer Need

Parental controls, location tracking, or extra line features can linger long after kids get older or lines are removed. These add-ons often stay active unless you manually cancel them.
