Let’s face it: When a roadside restaurant chain famous for peg games and oversized rocking chairs offers a better economic relief package than Washington, the system is officially broken. With national gas prices hovering at a wallet-shredding $4.50 a gallon, Cracker Barrel has looked out at the impending disaster of the summer road trip season and offered a chance for relief.
The chain recently announced a 10-week “Fuel Your Summer Road Trip” sweepstakes, promising to hand out $250,000 in free food and gasoline. While the federal government’s current strategy for soaring fuel costs seems to be “drive less and put it on a credit card,” Cracker Barrel is actually throwing drivers a lifeline. Sure, it’s a marketing gimmick to boost their app downloads, but when a plate of chicken dumplings comes with a side of fuel relief, consumers aren’t exactly in a position to be choosy.
How the Cracker Barrel Sweepstakes Works
Starting May 19 through July 26, 2026, the chain will select 25 winners each week to receive a $1,000 payout — split evenly as a $500 restaurant gift card and a $500 gas gift card. To get your hands on this hyper-localized economic relief package, you have to play by their rules:
- You must be a Cracker Barrel Rewards member, and each qualifying entrée purchase earns you one entry into that week’s drawing.
- If you want to double your chances, you can buy an in-store retail item, meaning you might need to purchase a porcelain doll or some apple butter just to maximize your fuel budget.
- The chain is also rolling out bonus entry opportunities tied to their Campfire Meals, effectively gamifying the process of keeping your sedan’s tank above empty.

The Sad State of Summer Spending
The fact that a comfort-food franchise is offering more tangible relief than a federal policy says everything you need to know about the current economy. With inflation officially hitting a three-year high of 3.8% and diesel costs driving up the price of literally everything on supermarket shelves, the summer vacation is on track to be a backyard-only affair for millions of families.
While it’s incredibly dystopian that Americans now have to rely on a sweepstakes drawing from a highway-side porch just to afford the drive to grandma’s house, the reality is that people will take the help wherever they can get it. If the government won’t lower the prices at the pump, we might as well eat some biscuits and hope the lottery gods are smiling.
More From Cheapism

- Sweet Relief: Gas Prices Have Dropped the Most in These States — Gas prices have reached new heights in recent weeks thanks to the war in Iran raising the cost of crude oil. By now, we’re all used to seeing $4 and $5 on the sign at the gas station. But there’s been a little bit of relief in the last week, thankfully, as the average price of gas has actually decreased.
- Gas Over Groceries? Consumers Are Scaling Back Grocery Spending Amid Rising Gas Prices — Rising gas prices aren’t merely an inconvenience. As it turns out, literally eating is becoming a luxury “hobby” that many of us simply can’t afford to maintain alongside a daily commute.
- Forget Costco: Kroger Might Just Be the Sleeper Hit of Cheap Gas — When you think of “cheap gas,” your mind likely goes straight to the massive lines at the Costco warehouse. But while the wholesale giant gets all the headlines, Kroger has quietly built a fueling empire that actually dwarfs most of its competitors.
