A jar labeled "RETIREMENT" filled with cash sits on a table with coins, a calculator, dollar bills, a notepad listing retirement plans, glasses, a pen, and a cup of coffee, all on a map of the United States.

Once upon a time, retirement followed a template: You worked until 65, and then your coworkers threw a potluck celebration in the conference room for you and sent you on your way. On to traveling, mowing the lawn too often, and picking up new hobbies. Pensions were the norm.

Now, a new state-by-state analysis from GOBankingRates showing how much savings is needed to retire by 65 in each state is revealing some concerning discrepancies. Depending on where you live, the savings requirement can vary by as much as $1.46 million. Yikes, right? We’ve gathered the findings for each state below so you can see how your future is stacking up.

Meet the Writer

Rachel is a Michigan-based writer who has dabbled in a variety of subject matter throughout her career. As a mom of multiple young children, she tries to maintain a sustainable lifestyle for her family. She grows vegetables in her garden, gets her meat in bulk from local farmers, and cans fruits and vegetables with friends. Her kids have plenty of hand-me-downs in their closets, but her husband jokes that before long, they might need to invest in a new driveway thanks to the frequent visits from delivery trucks dropping off online purchases (she can’t pass up a good deal, after all).
