It’s been a rough start to 2026 for many retailers, and you can add another one to the list. Saks Off 5th, the off-price discount store associated with luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue, is closing all but a dozen of its stores — and with only a few weeks notice. Here’s why, plus the full list of locations that are closing.
Why Is Saks Closing Stores?
Saks Global — the parent company of Saks Off 5th, Neiman Marcus, and Last Call, among other stores — filed for bankruptcy in mid January. The move was seen as “inevitable” after the company missed interest payments to bondholders, according to CNBC.
The company has had debt pile up for a while now, and we can’t say we’re surprised. Saks sells expensive luxury brands, and even the prices at Saks Off 5th are too much for many middle class families to afford. As wallets tighten due to inflation, tariffs, and job uncertainty, people just aren’t going to splurge on luxury brands anymore.
As part of the bankruptcy restructuring process, Saks Global announced that it will be closing nearly all Saks Off 5th locations. The company is backing off from discount retail in order to focus on luxury brands in full-price stores, according to CBS News. Apparently rich people are still able to buy $10,000 handbags, huh?
