Tariffs have been the hot topic of conversation ever since President Trump implemented them. Now, thanks to a recent Supreme Court verdict ruling them unconstitutional, everyone’s talking about refunds. That includes Costco CEO Ron Vachris, who hinted that any tariff refund Costco receives could mean lower prices for the store’s members. Here’s what that might mean for you.

Tariff Refunds Go to Big Business

The word “refund” sounds fantastic to most people, especially since we know that consumers ended up paying for the majority of the tariff costs that businesses incurred. But because nothing in life is fair, that money will not be coming back to us.

Costco CEO Ron Vachris said Costco would pass along the tariff rebate to its members. Costco was one of several companies that joined a lawsuit challenging the legality of Trump’s tariffs. The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, struck down the tariffs on the grounds that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize the President to impose tariffs. As a result, the government is supposed to pay the tariffs back to companies and Costco is one of them. He said – ““As we’ve done in the past, when legal challenges have recovered charges passed on in some form to our members, our commitment will be to find the best way to return this value to our members through lower prices and better values […] We’ll be transparent in how we plan to do this, if and when we receive any refunds.” It’s still unclear how they will pass the tariff rebate back to customers, it could be cost savings or a cash payment, but I’ll keep you in the loop as I learn more. #costco #costcofinds

Any refunds issued will go back to the 330,000 importers who paid the levies and, in turn, passed the extra costs on to you. So, as usual, the little guy is left footing the bill while big companies get a windfall. And do you really think that companies will lower their prices if tariffs go away and they get a refund? Definitely not — unless you’re talking about Costco.

What Costco Members Can Expect

On a recent earnings call, Vachris addressed possible tariff refunds, and gave hope to Costco members that some relief could be on the way if they happen.

“As we’ve done in the past, when legal challenges have recovered charges,” he said, “our commitment will be to find the best way to return this value to our members through lower prices and better values… We’ll be transparent in how we plan to do this, if and when we receive any refunds.”

While Vachris made sure to emphasize the uncertainty of the refund situation (as with all things government, the process is about as clear as mud right now), that sounds like a pretty promising plan — and one that actually considers consumer wallets and not just shareholders.

That’s not a new strategy for Costco, which actually came up with a plan to avoid passing tariff costs on to the customers as little as possible. It was also one of the companies to sue the federal government in order to get refunded for the tariffs months before they were ruled illegal by the Supreme Court decision.

Costco members on social media are quick to show their appreciation for what they see as a big company finally standing up for the little guy. “God I love this place,” said one member on Reddit in a thread about the lawsuit. “I bought a 77″ LG C4 TV and a 20-pack of underwear in the same shopping trip and now this? Member for life, I tell you.”

Another Redditor posted something that we can all agree with, no matter our political affiliation: “Costco has shown more spine than all of our elected officials.”
